Eventually, the bills catch up. And taxpayers are left facing the consequences. In this episode of Love the North, Ward 8 candidate Shawn Rossi discusses why Greater Sudbury is facing mounting infrastructure costs and why he believes past financial decisions have contributed to the problem. Rossi argues that previous councils avoided necessary tax increases, particularly around election periods, while spending less than required to properly maintain roads and other essential infrastructure. He points to an estimated $81 million annually needed just to maintain the city's roads at their existing condition, suggesting that years of underfunding have created a growing financial gap. Now the chickens have come home to roost. Roads still need repairs, infrastructure continues to deteriorate, and the money required to address those problems doesn't simply disappear because taxes weren't increased. Rossi acknowledges that nobody wants higher property taxes, but argues that promising to freeze taxes without explaining which services or repairs would be reduced isn't realistic. He believes City Hall needs better long-term planning, annual financial accountability, and repairs that last instead of repeatedly spending money on temporary Band-Aid solutions. But that raises an important question: Could better planning and spending decisions have prevented some of today's financial pressure? And how should Greater Sudbury balance affordability with the growing cost of maintaining its infrastructure?
