In this episode of Love the North, mayoral candidate Rodney Newton discusses his frustration with what he describes as years of broken promises, poor accountability, and municipal decisions that leave taxpayers questioning where their money is going. Newton argues that election after election, residents hear commitments to fix longstanding problems, yet deteriorating infrastructure, homelessness, public safety concerns, and rising costs remain major challenges. He questions why the city continues committing money to major projects such as the downtown Event Centre when so many existing problems still need attention. His message is that Greater Sudbury needs more than temporary Band-Aid solutions. It needs lasting repairs, responsible financial management, and public officials who follow through on their commitments. Newton also supports restoring an independent Auditor General to examine municipal spending and help hold decision-makers accountable. But broken promises can have another consequence: declining public trust. When residents believe their voices aren't being heard and that nothing will change, some simply stop participating in municipal elections. Newton believes rebuilding that trust requires action, transparency, and measurable results rather than another round of campaign promises. What would meaningful accountability look like? Should elected officials publicly report their progress on commitments made during elections? And how can taxpayers determine whether they're receiving real value for their money? #LoveTheNorth #RodneyNewton #GreaterSudbury #SudburyElection2026 #BrokenPromises #Accountability #TaxpayerDollars #CityHall
