Full podcast: https://lovethenorth.ca/article/261009-sudbury-ward-11-amy-voz Can Greater Sudbury really build a world-class entertainment centre for $200 million, and what will taxpayers ultimately pay? In this episode of Love the North, Ward 11 candidate Amy Voz questions the cost, priorities, and long-term financial implications of the new downtown Event Centre. Amy says she would not have supported spending $200 million on the project before addressing some of Greater Sudbury's more pressing challenges, including mental health, addiction, homelessness, and affordable housing. But with the project already moving forward, she doesn't believe stopping construction is the answer. Instead, she argues that every dollar must be carefully scrutinized to ensure taxpayers receive real value. And there's another concern: Is $200 million even enough to deliver the world-class facility being discussed? Construction materials, labour, financing, and delays can all increase the final cost. Borrowing money also raises questions about interest payments and the financial obligations future generations may inherit. Meanwhile, Greater Sudbury continues facing deteriorating roads, aging infrastructure, and rising property taxes. Amy believes the city needs to look beyond the initial price tag and consider the long-term return on investment. Will the Event Centre attract enough concerts, events, visitors, and economic activity to justify its cost? What will annual operating and maintenance expenses look like? And how much of the financial burden will ultimately fall on property taxpayers? Amy's message is that major investments require transparency, careful planning, and accountability.
