Full Podcast: https://lovethenorth.ca/article/261018-ward-12-candidate-linnet-rimmer In this episode of Love the North, Greater Sudbury Ward 12 candidate Linnet Rimmer discusses the connection between trauma, addiction, and the struggles facing people in our community. For many individuals, substance use can begin as a way to escape emotional pain, childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, grief, or overwhelming life experiences. Drugs and alcohol may temporarily numb painful memories, ease anxiety, or provide relief from emotions that feel impossible to manage. What begins as a coping mechanism, however, can eventually develop into dependency, creating even greater challenges. This raises an important question: Are we addressing the underlying causes of addiction, or simply responding to the consequences? When communities focus primarily on substance use, homelessness, and public disorder, they risk overlooking the experiences that may have contributed to those struggles. Trauma-informed care recognizes that recovery often requires more than simply stopping substance use. Mental health support, stable housing, meaningful relationships, and access to treatment can help people rebuild their lives. While not every addiction is rooted in trauma, understanding the connection could change how we approach prevention, treatment, and recovery. For Greater Sudbury, this conversation is about more than addiction. It's about addressing problems earlier, supporting vulnerable individuals, and potentially breaking cycles of trauma that can affect families for generations. Could investing in mental health and trauma recovery today reduce addiction, homelessness, and the financial burden on our communities tomorrow?
