In this Love the North podcast, host Mike Richardson speaks with Navy veteran Mike Jensen about how more than 20 years in the Royal Canadian Navy prepared him for a successful career long after leaving the military. Growing up in Iron Bridge, Ontario, Mike joined the Navy in 1988 as a Marine Engineering Mechanic. Training went far beyond learning how to operate and repair equipment. He learned discipline, punctuality, teamwork, leadership, accountability and how to solve problems under pressure. The Navy also provided extensive technical education in mechanical engineering, electrical systems, hydraulics, refrigeration, machining, metallurgy and preventive maintenance. Imagine being responsible for keeping a warship operational thousands of kilometres from home, with no hardware store or repair shop nearby! You learn to diagnose problems, manufacture parts, work together and find solutions. But here's where the story gets interesting. After retiring as a Petty Officer First Class, Mike brought that knowledge back to Greater Sudbury, spending 17 years in the City's Water and Wastewater Division, eventually becoming Director. He also became an instructor at Cambrian College, sharing his experience with the next generation of skilled workers. Today, Mike continues serving his community through veteran peer support and an initiative to develop affordable housing for veterans and first responders. Military service doesn't just prepare someone for a job. It can develop skills that benefit families, workplaces and entire communities for decades. #LoveTheNorth #CanadianNavy #MilitaryVeterans #LifeSkills #Leadership #SkilledTrades #CareerDevelopment #NorthernOntario #VeteranSupport
