He argues that someone experiencing homelessness should not automatically be viewed as an addict or a criminal, and that the real question should be: what happened in that person’s life, and what support do they actually need? Drawing on his experience working in group homes, youth services, the Blue Door Soup Kitchen, and with people experiencing homelessness, Johnston says many people are dealing with trauma, mental-health challenges, addiction, poverty, or circumstances that pushed them into survival mode. He believes the solution starts with understanding the individual rather than judging the situation from the outside. Johnston also talks about helping people directly — including hiring people living at Energy Court for work — as an example of why opportunity, trust, and basic human respect can matter. His message is that social or economic status should never determine a person’s value.
