According to local residents, it's making a comeback, and demand for agricultural land is growing. In this Love the North conversation, Chloe Bichette, a founding member of the Massey Wildlife Conservation Committee, explains how families are investing in farmland, restoring agricultural properties, and expanding livestock operations in the Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers. Mennonite families have played an important role in this agricultural revival. What began with families purchasing farms years ago has grown into a new generation wanting to establish farming operations of their own. But there's a problem. Everyone wants a farm, and suitable agricultural land isn't unlimited. As demand for locally raised beef and other farm products continues to grow, land needed for hay, silage, livestock, and future agricultural expansion becomes increasingly valuable. Now, a proposed industrial-scale solar development has raised concerns about the potential loss of productive agricultural land. Chloe questions whether communities should be converting farmland to energy production when more young families are looking for opportunities to farm. Renewable energy is important, but so is protecting the land that feeds our communities. Once productive farmland is taken out of agricultural use, bringing it back isn't always simple. If Northern Ontario has a growing generation of farmers ready to invest in agriculture, shouldn't we be protecting that opportunity? #LoveTheNorth #MasseyOntario #ProtectFarmland #NorthernOntario
