Full podcast: https://lovethenorth.ca/article/251210-trades-automotive Greater Sudbury is known for its mining industry, but could the success of our mines be creating a serious challenge for another essential industry — automotive repair? Skilled automotive mechanics are increasingly faced with a difficult choice. Stay in the garage working on cars and trucks, or pursue opportunities in the mining sector where higher wages, benefits, and career advancement can make the move financially attractive. For many tradespeople, the decision comes down to providing a better life for themselves and their families. But what happens to our local automotive repair shops when experienced mechanics leave? In this episode of Love the North, we explore the growing challenges facing the automotive trades, including recruiting new technicians, retaining experienced workers, and competing with the compensation packages offered by Northern Ontario's mining industry. Modern vehicles are becoming increasingly sophisticated, requiring technicians to understand advanced electronics, computer diagnostics, and complex mechanical systems. Training takes years, equipment is expensive, and finding qualified people isn't getting any easier. When automotive shops struggle to attract and retain mechanics, the consequences can eventually reach everyone — longer repair wait times, increased labour costs, and fewer options for vehicle maintenance. The question isn't whether mining jobs are good for our community. They absolutely are. The bigger question is how we ensure that other essential trades can remain competitive and continue attracting the next generation of skilled workers. Could better compensation, stronger apprenticeship programs, and greater recognition of automotive technicians help close the gap?
