In this episode of Love the North, Ward 8 candidate Karan Bedhesha discusses the growing affordability crisis and why he believes the city should consider freezing property taxes until conditions improve for residents. Karan argues that before governments focus on additional spending, they must recognize three fundamental needs: food, shelter, and the opportunity to grow and prosper. If families are struggling to put meals on the table, young adults cannot afford their first homes, and seniors are finding it increasingly difficult to remain in the homes they've paid for, should increasing property taxes remain an option? He acknowledges that municipalities need tax revenue to maintain essential services and infrastructure. However, he believes Greater Sudbury must find alternative ways to generate revenue and reduce the financial burden on working families and seniors. Karan also discusses the possibility of greater property tax relief for seniors who have spent their lives working, contributing to the economy, and paying taxes. With Northern Ontario generating significant wealth through mining and natural resources, he questions whether more of that prosperity could help make life affordable for local residents. But freezing taxes raises an important challenge: How would the city balance its budget, maintain essential services, and address infrastructure costs without increasing property taxes? Karan's central message is that affordability should be a priority in municipal decision-making. Should residents have their basic needs met before City Hall asks them to pay more? #LoveTheNorth #KaranBedhesha #Ward8 #GreaterSudbury #PropertyTaxes #Affordability #SudburyElection2026
