For many mothers, the loss of a baby during pregnancy is something they carry in their hearts for the rest of their lives. Whether that loss happens in the first few weeks, later in pregnancy, or shortly after birth, the love and dreams surrounding that child can remain forever. In this deeply emotional episode of Love the North, Colleen and Annie from Butterfly Wings Perinatal Bereavement Services explain why pregnancy loss is so often misunderstood and why grieving parents need compassion rather than judgment. Colleen, who experienced eight pregnancy losses herself, describes a concept called "grieving forward." Parents aren't only grieving the baby they lost. They're grieving every moment they will never experience. The first smile. The first steps. The first birthday. The first day of school. The hugs, laughter, and memories that were supposed to fill a lifetime. And that grief doesn't simply disappear with time. One of the most painful challenges is hearing comments such as "You can always try again" or "At least it happened early." Although often well-intentioned, these words can minimize a loss that was deeply meaningful to the family. Colleen and Annie emphasize that every baby's life matters, regardless of how long that life lasted. Mothers, fathers, grandparents, and siblings can all experience grief differently, and there is no deadline for healing. Through remembrance events, candlelight ceremonies, butterfly releases, and ongoing support, Butterfly Wings helps families honour their babies and find comfort among others who understand. #LoveTheNorth #ButterflyWings #PregnancyLoss #InfantLoss #MiscarriageAwareness #GrievingForward #EveryBabyMatters #GriefSupport #GreaterSudbury #NorthernOntario
