In this episode of Love the North, Jill from PetSave discusses the challenges facing animal rescue organizations, including the growing financial burden of boarding animals and the limited space available to care for them. When shelters and foster homes are full, rescue organizations may have to turn to private boarding facilities to keep animals safe. But boarding comes at a cost, and those expenses can quickly add up. Every additional day means more money spent on accommodation, food, cleaning, and potentially veterinary care. For animals requiring weeks or months of support, those costs can consume resources that could otherwise help rescue more animals. And money isn't the only limitation. Kennel space is finite. Even when an organization has funding available, finding a suitable place for another dog or cat can become a serious challenge. Some animals also require specialized care, medical attention, or an environment suited to their behaviour, making placement even more difficult. This creates a difficult situation: How can rescue organizations continue accepting animals when they are already stretched beyond their available space and financial resources? Foster families, responsible pet ownership, spaying and neutering, donations, and community involvement can all help reduce pressure on the system. The bigger question is whether we're doing enough to prevent animals from entering an already overwhelmed rescue system. Every animal deserves a safe place to go, but who carries the cost when shelters are full?
