Ward 8 candidate Shawn Rossi joins Love the North to examine a difficult question: Are our public systems designed to solve problems, or have we become accustomed to continually paying to manage them? From homelessness and addiction to mental health, deteriorating roads and municipal spending, Rossi argues that too many resources are directed toward treating symptoms instead of addressing the underlying problems. Drawing on his healthcare experience, Rossi raises a particularly interesting concern: money drives decisions. Treatments, medications, surgeries and infrastructure projects all have industries and financial incentives behind them. But what happens when the solution involves long-term mental health support, addiction recovery or preventing a problem before it develops? Rossi suggests this is one reason mental health and addiction services have struggled to receive the attention and investment they require. He discusses his vision for a day hospital that could provide treatment and support while reducing pressure on existing healthcare facilities. The same thinking applies to municipal infrastructure. Why repeatedly patch the same potholes when investing in proper repairs could potentially save taxpayers money over time? The larger issue is accountability. Are we measuring how much government spends, or whether that spending actually produces lasting results? Every dollar comes from somewhere, and taxpayers ultimately carry the financial burden. If money drives so many decisions, how do we ensure it is being directed toward solutions that genuinely improve people's lives? #LoveTheNorth #Sudbury #Ward8 #ShawnRossi #MunicipalElection2026 #TaxpayerMoney #MentalHealth #Addiction
